5/20/14

Do Now : I was about 5 or 6 when i use to get whatever i wanted when i wanted . Everything i asked for my mother went out her way to get it since she was playing both the mother and the father role . Now that i have gotten older , everything changed . I don't get nothing i ask for because my mom feels that i am getting older and need to start taking responsibility and being independent . If i could go back in time i would and do it all over again .

Reflection : Jean Bauby would interpret the quote from Dante by saying how is childhood was before and now how is is now that he can't do anything . Jean Bauby relies on his memories that's what shapes him as a person .

How was Brazil Founded ? Brazil as we know it today was founded when the Spanish and Portuguese empires signed the Treaty of Torsedillas sometime in the 1500s. Both the Spanish and Portuguese had started colonies in South America, and wanting to avoid a war over whose lads was whose, they signed the treaty of Torsedillas stating that everything North of the Rio de la Plata and ParanĂ¡ rivers and East of the Andes mountain range was property of Portugal, which later names the region Brazil. Because accurate maps of the continent were not yet available, neither the Portuguese nor the Spanish knew how much land that space included.

Language Of Brazil : Language is one of the strongest elements of Brazil's national unity. Portuguese is spoken by nearly 100 percent of the population. There is about as much difference between the Portuguese spoken in Brazil and that spoken in Portugal as between the English spoken in the United States and that spoken in the United Kingdom. Within Brazil, there are no dialects of Portuguese, but only moderate regional variation in accent, vocabulary, and use of personal nouns, pronouns, and verb conjugations.

Climate: mostly tropical, but temperate in south

1/5/14

Quick Write : I cannot give you an honest answer cause I would have to actually be in that situation before I could know what I'd do. Part of me would not want to live that way, part of me would hang on to life with all my strength. I cannot truly tell how I'd feel until I was in that position. I have known some terribly handicapped people, most of whom did very well for themselves, despite their handicap. Some were depressed over their difficulities, some made the best of a bad situation. I do know that I would likely have a hard time if I couldn't "do" for myself as I am used to doing.

Quick Write : My family and being able to breathe is what makes life worth living for me .

3 observations : I noticed that the computer is talking for the man
I also noticed that the man needed special help .
He can only move one eye .

2 questions : Does the man ever think about what life would be like if he was normal ?
How does he communicate with anyone other then with a computer ?

1 emotion : heartbroken , because its really sad from being able to do everything to being able to anything at all .

Reflection : Helping is what makes life worth living . Being able to lend a hand to people in need . achieving is another working towards, and  achieving goals, no matter what those goals are.  And always growing , Learning new things, improving my knowledge and ability in the things I’ve already learned.

Quick Write : The main character in my independent reading book is tyrell . tyrell went from having a fixed mindset to having a growth mindset . in the beginning of the book , tyrell felt like he couldn't take care of his brother because he was too young and couldn't even take care of himself . But one day tyrell woke up and thought that if he didn't take care of his little brother then nobody would . tyrell found himself a job where you made good money to be able to look after himself and his little brother .

It does not matter how slowly you go so long as you do not stop. Confucius

This quote means that as long as you keep trying is what really matters . it does not matter how long it takes you as long as you do not give up. I agree with this quote because Even small steps in the right direction can add up and make a big difference in the long run. As long as you keep working toward your dreams and goals, even if it’s just a few minutes each day, you can achieve them.

mindset Reflection

Two aspect's of mindset that I would change would be when the person in the video said that people with fixed mindset's usually ignore useful advice and when the video also said that people with fixed mindset's just give up easily. Those were the main two aspects of mindset that I would need to change in myself because I always give up easily and thinks things are to hard when challenges get difficult and I also ignore when other try to give me helpful advice.   I am a person with a fixed mindset who needs a lot to change because since I have a fixed mindset everything seems so much difficult and challenging for me; so I easily give up and don't way to hear what anyone has to say, because I feel everyone is against me and attacking me for nothing; it is all just in my head.

In your opinion should smart kids have their own classrooms or schools like Stuyvesant or Bronx Science? Why or why not?

I think grouping kids by their abilities is unfair. I say this because you make kids feel like they are better than other kids by grouping them by their abilities. Just because a kid may learn something quicker than another kid doesn’t make them better. Every kid in the world can learn and be taught. So teach and treat all the kids the same. Even if some kids learn faster or are easier to teach .
Summary : Today i learned that when students are grouped into separate classes and given the same curriculum , there is no effect on the achievement . But when the curriculum is adjusted to correspond to ability level , students achievement become higher One student who is a excellent reader may take an honors English course, while another student who struggles with reading may take a remedial reading course.

Claims and Counterclaims

Quick Write : It is my strong opinion that the best thing ever invented was the cellphones . I say this because without cellphones , you wouldn't have any communication with your friends or family .  Another reason I believe this is because   without cellphones , people wouldn't know if something is an emergency or not .

Summary :  Today  i read that students with a fixed mindset showed decline in their grades . also , students with a growth mindset happen to increase their grades over the two years .  students who believe they can grow their basic abilities have greater motivation and higher achievement than do students who believe their abilities are fixed, and that teachers can influence students’ mindsets.

true grit 2/24/14

What is Grit?
Grit is the key to success.

Do I have Grit?

Yes I do have Grit. I always set a goal for myself and I always stick to them. Even though many people set goals for themselves but not all of them really stick to them and end up giving up on their goals. I got my Grit by realizing that I needed to get myself together and the only way I would be able to do that would be by setting myself goals. Setting goals allows you to choose how you want to move through life.  Setting and meeting goals leads to feelings of satisfaction and accomplishment.

How do we change our mindset?

Why do people think differently from each other ?

People think differently from each other because of the strong differences in people’s backgrounds, experiences, training, or ways of learning.

Reflection : Write a two-paragraph reflection on your blog explaining how your answers may now have changed or become clearer or more meaningful since completing the reading.
